Common Pump/Hose Configurations

Standard Hose Lay:

  • Single pump system
  • Basic water delivery system for the majority of fireline situations
  • 3 way attached as close the anchor point as possible to begin establishing perimeter control
  • Econo line can be introduced throughout this system by attaching water thieves

Relay System:

Advantage of this system include:
  • Moves water long distances
  • Decreased pressure strain on the hose lay
  • continued water supply to the fireline for a time from the tank, even if the primary pump fails

Disadvantages include:
  • Multiple pump operators may be required
  • Effective communication required between operators
  • Additional equipment required(relay tank)

Tandem Series System:

Advantage of this system include:
  • Doubles pressure delivery
  • One pump operator may operate both pumps
  • Moves water long distances

Disadvantages include:
  • Very high pressures generated, may rupture hose, especially if old/damaged hose is used
  • If one pump fails, the system will no longer be adequate
  • Requires an adapter to connect first pump output to intake of second

Tandem Parallel System:

Advantage of this system include:
  • Doubles the volume of water delivered
  • One pump operator may operate both pumps
  • If one pump fails, some volume of water is supplying the system

Disadvantages include:
  • No major effect on pressure output
