Exposure Control

Purpose

SNRC is committed to providing a safe and healthy workplace for all of our employees. This is to protect our own workers as well as any other workers or clients who enter the workplace.

 

Modes of Disease Transmission
  • Blood borne diseases: blood or body fluids containing the virus must enter the bloodstream through open wound injuries or splashes to mucous membranes (especially eyes and mouth). Intact skin is an effective barrier against virus entry.
  • Examples: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C
  • Contact diseases: infectious diseases transmitted through direct or indirect contact with bacteria or viruses. Contact diseases include blood borne diseases.
  • Direct contact: physical contact with an infected person, usually occurring through direct contact with blood or bodily fluid.
  • Indirect contact: touching an object in the environment that has been contaminated by the deposit of bacteria from an infected person.
  • Examples: Norwalk Virus, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium difficile (C. difficile)
  • These diseases usually have temporary acute symptoms for workers but may have serious consequences for those who are frail or immuno-compromised.

 

Airborne Diseases
  • Infectious diseases that spread by coughing, sneezing, and talking in the form of:
    • Large-particle respiratory droplets: travel <2m
    • Aerosolized airborne droplet nuclei: evaporated droplets that travel considerable distance via air currents
  • Examples: Tuberculosis, Measles, Mumps, Influenza, and Chicken pox.

 

Work Methods Resulting in Exposure
  • Work methods that may result in exposure at SNRC are generally limited to daily indirect contact between workers in both office and field environments.

 

Risk Controls/Safe Work Procedures (SWPs)
  • Administrative Controls
    • Effective control of communicable diseases at SNRC comes with SWPs that emphasize hand hygiene and cough/sneeze etiquette.
    • Employees will also be encouraged to stay at home when ill.
